Crossed by Ally Condie

TITLE:  Crossed
AUTHOR:  Condie, Ally
GENRE:  Fiction/Fantasy
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED: 12/29/2011

To begin with, I would like to say how ashamed I am that it took me over a month to finish this book.  However, if you really added up only that days I actually read, I read it in under a week.  I suppose the knitting projects proved a little too much for me.  During the Christmas/birthday season I received a few excellent book choices so I figured I'd better get my tushy in gear.  Now, back to the review at hand.

I must say, I loved Crossed much more than Condie's first novel, Matched.  The characters became more developed.  It was nice to move further from the dystopian society, and more into places where the characters could make decisions for themselves.  I enjoyed Cassia's written company far more than in the first book.

The one gripe I had for this novel was the constant switching back and forth between the two character's points of view.  There were times where I would have to flip back to see who was dictating a chapter (because the character's voices were so similar).  Other than that, it was very fun to read.

On to a birthday present for my next book!

AFK...

I must admit, for about the next month or so, I may be AFK.  For those of you savvy with computers, you may think this means Away From Keyboard.  But seeing as it is the holiday season (and my family friends will be receiving all sorts of goodies from me) it stands for Away For Knitting.

I'll still be reading, but I may not be able to update on a regular basis.  I'll make sure to keep a record of all of my reading, and I'll update whenever I get a chance.  Until then, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season (and that you all get at least one book under the tree!).

Happy Holidays!

Matched by Ally Condie

TITLE:  Matched
AUTHOR:  Condie, Ally
GENRE:  Fiction/Fantasy
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED: 11/28/2011

I've been wanting to pick up this story for the longest time (it has a great cover!), and I've also heard some wonderful things from my friends.  And this year, for our anniversary, my boyfriend of 4 years took me to B&N and said I could pick any book I wanted!!!  Talk about a keeper!  Not to mention a splurge on my favorite coffee and the cutest coffee mug to keep it in...  :-D

After plenty of hard work and turmoil, I have finally completed this book.   It wasn't hard to get through or anything, I've just been crazy busy!  If I really put my nose to the pages (as I should) I probably would have finished it within a day or two.  However, I've been knitting like crazy so it's been hard to find the time.

Now, down to business.  This book was extremely interesting.  For those of you who've read The Giver by Lois Lowry, it's kind of similar (except with a love triangle thrown in).  I must say, I agree with all of the reviews and give this book a solid 4/5.  I may have dropped it down to a 3.5 for predictability, but the characters and the setting were fabulous.  I've decided to pick up the recently released sequel, Crossed, as my next book of choice.  Pick up the first one, and let others know what you think.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire

TITLE:  Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister
AUTHOR:  Maguire, Gregory
GENRE:  Fiction/Fantasy
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED: 11/12/2011

This book was lovely.  If you like fairy tales (or stories that turn fairy tales upside-down) then this book (or any of Gregory Maguire's books) are for you!  I loved the way this story unfolded and became a brand new version of Cinderella.

The constant mentions of paintings and the way painters see the world adds a fantastic parallel to the story.  Please pick this book up.  It's charming!

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

TITLE:  Neverwhere
AUTHOR:  Gaiman, Neil
GENRE:  Fiction/Fantasy
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED: 11/2/2011

So, I finally got power back!  It's been a little rough, but now I can blog about the book I've finished and the book I started.  I recently finished Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman (by the light of a candle!), and I have to say it was way better than anticipated.

When I started it, it seemed to be dragging its feet a little bit.  But once I got into the thick of the story, it flew right by.  The setting of the London underworld is spectacular, and its characters are extremely different and entertaining.  This is a gem within the fantasy genre.

20 Times a Lady by Karyn Bosnak

TITLE:  20 Times a Lady
AUTHOR:  Bosnak, Karyn
GENRE:  Fiction/Chicklit
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED: 10/19/2011

Allright.  Sure this book was campy, and ridiculously cheesy.  It was everything I expected to be.  And as a silly chicklit novel, it was spectacular!  If you're looking for something fun and predictable, this book is your poison.  Hysterical!

I definitely want to check out the movie that was inspired by the book.  I can totally picture Anna Faris playing the candid Delilah Darling (now Ally Darling).  I can also picture Chris Evans being fantastic as Colin Brody (or Colin Shea, sans Irish accent).

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be just as funny as the book.

TITLE:  The Friday Night Knitting Club
AUTHOR:  Jacobs, Kate
GENRE: Fiction
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED: 10/10/2011

I just got back from my annual family camping trip, and I finished this book on the ride home.  What a wonderful story!  I have to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys tear-jerkers because it definitely brought a tear to my eye.  While it was sad at times, it was also such a lovely portrayal of loyalty and empowerment among women.  It has inspired me to pick up my knitting once more, and to start baking more often.

There is healing to be found within its pages for all.  Please pick this book up if you're looking for some sagely advice about parenting, family, love, and life itself.  An instant classic!

Contagion by Robin Cook

TITLE:  Contagion
AUTHOR:  Cook, Robin
GENRE: Fiction/Medical Thriller
MY RATING:  3/5
DATE FINISHED: 10/2/2011

I'm happy to say that I've finally finished this book.  I'll admit that the ending twist was fantastic in this medical whodunnit.  But overall, the book just seemed way too drawn out to be entertaining.

The characters were well developed and complex.  I was extremely frustrated with the main character in particular.  There were few intelligent decisions made.  I understand what draws people to read these stories, but perhaps they are better suited for a day at the beach.

Feel free to pick this one up.  It was a satisfactory medical thriller.  I guess medical thrillers just aren't my genre.  But remember... this Contagion is set in 1996, and is not the same as the Contagion film released in 2011.

TITLE:  Hidden
AUTHOR:  Boland, Shalini
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  9/19/2011

I am now done with the first book in the Marchwood vampire series!  It was absolutely fantastic, so kudos to my best friend for letting me another fabulous story (yet again).  I finished this lent book on my NookColor with 10 days to spare.  10/14 days.  Needless to say, it is a very quick read.

The characters were a joy to read about, and I must say my friend is an excellent judge of books.  This book would absolutely make a great movie!  You can literally picture each scene, and how they would film all of the different exotic locations.  This book is definitely a must read for anyone!  Just beware... you will get hooked.  I cannot wait for the sequel!  It's supposed to come out later this year.

The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

TITLE:  The Sweet Far Thing
AUTHOR:  Bray, Libba
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED:  9/15/2011

I am finally finished with the infamous Gemma Doyle trilogy!  And what a wonderful ride it was!!!

Upon reflection of the book at hand, I must admit that this was not my favorite story out of the trilogy.  I normally love all of the characters within the book, but I found some of their personality to be a bit grating during this one.  There were times where I felt like shouting, "What are you doing?!" to a certain character.  Libba Bray has written these characters beautifully and each has a mind of his or her own.  They can jump right off of the page at you.

Thank being said, the plot was lovely, and Ms. Bray did not disappoint in tying up of loose ends.  This book is for those who adore a tale of adventure, heart-break, and discovering onself.  A fabulous story for all ages.

Rebel Angels by Libba Bray

TITLE:  Rebel Angels
AUTHOR:  Bray, Libba
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED:  9/8/2011

I've just finished the second book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy, and it was absolutely wonderful.  The characters have all continued their growth, and they've become good friends.  This sequel to A Great and Terrible Beauty was filled with secrets and discoveries.  The series continues to be an incredible escape from the ordinary into the curious Victorian world.

Please dive into this series if you're in the need for a vacation from reality.  The story is lovely and intriguing, and will keep you guessing.  Some things may appear predictable to the experienced reader, but Libba Bray proves that nothing is ever as it seems.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

TITLE:  A Great and Terrible Beauty
AUTHOR:  Bray, Libba
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  9/2/2011

I actually finished this book early this morning, and didn't get to blog about it until now.  It was fantastic.  I couldn't wait to read the sequels to it, so I bugged out to B&N yesterday and bought them both.  Now I'm all set.  There are a lot of characters to keep track of, so I would rather just read straight through the series.  Now that I have them waiting on the shelf, I am extremely excited to get to reading.

The four main characters are such a joy to read about.  Gemma, Felicity, Pippa, and Ann are all so unique and compliment each other beautifully.  My favorite thing about this story would have to be the rich Victorian environment that Libba Bray creates.  This book truly is one that you should curl up under the covers to read.

It's genuinely lovely.

The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

TITLE:  The Peach Keeper
AUTHOR:  Allen, Sarah Addison
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  5/5
DATE FINISHED:  8/23/2011

This book was exactly what I needed after my long dry spell.  I have just moved in to my new abode, and it was the perfect complement to create comfort.  The setting was gloriously rich and mysterious.  And the writing, even more so.  Ms. Allen has done it yet again.  The only sadness I experienced was that it came to an end far too soon.  I can and will wait ages for her next novel with great anticipation.

I would recommend this book to anyone that understands that inexplicable bond shared between women.  I have passed this book on to my best and closest friend with the hope that she will enjoy it just as much as I have.  Take a risk and spread happiness by sharing this book with yourself and your loved ones!

One Day by David Nicholls

TITLE:  One Day
AUTHOR:  Nicholls, David
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  2/5
DATE FINISHED:  8/17/2011

Before I even begin to assess the specifics of this book, I need to state that it was just not my favorite.  I appreciated the story line, but the way it was written was too full of melancholy and I found it almost... whiny.

I really couldn't connect to either of the main characters.  I felt each was too stubborn and unyielding in his or her respects.  Emma was far too stubborn and idealistic for my taste.  And I felt Dexter was just designed to be a grotesque, cookie-cutter playboy.  Usually I connect more and find more depth with novel characters.

I picked up this book due to its fabulous reviews, but I have to say I found it wanting.  Overall, not my cup of tea at all.  Hopefully, others will have better luck.  Maybe (for the first time ever) I'll find the movie to be better than the book.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

TITLE:  The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
AUTHOR:  Bender, Aimee
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  3/5
DATE FINISHED:  8/2/2011

I have to admit that this book was absolutely fascinating, and very strange.  The characters within all seemed so disconnected, but in a way, that added a delightful challenge to the story.  The main character, Rosie's, gift turns out to be both a gift and a curse.

I found this book a little difficult to read at times due to the lack of punctuation (quotation marks for dialogue were not included).  But to each author, his or her own.  It was an intriguing style.

It's a very quick, distracting read, and is definitely a book that I would recommend for anyone looking for just that.  A quick distraction.  Lovely.

Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt

TITLE:  Daughters of the Witching Hill
AUTHOR:  Sharratt, Mary
GENRE:  Fiction/Fantasy
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED:  7/31/2011

This book is so deep, rich, and filled with the spirits of the hundreds of those falsely accused of witchcraft.  I must begin my review by saying it was a wonderfully told story.  The writing is deliciously straight out of the 1600's, and so are the characters and settings.  It was slightly difficult to dig into at first.  But once you get used to the style of writing, and get into the plot line a little more, this tale unfolds before your eyes.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys hysterical fiction, and any recounts of the witch trials.  My heart goes out to those who were falsely condemned by those who were simply misled.

Honorable Mention: The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

I'm still in the process of reading Daughters of the Witching Hill, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.  I cannot help but find similarities between this book and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe.  I read this book quite a while ago (after purchasing it for my best friend for Halloween).  I absolutely fell in love with the story as well as the writing.  Katherine Howe is a brilliant author, and she really brings this story to life.

Therefore, I figured this book deserves an "Honorable Mention".  I've decided I need to start doing this for books that I read before I started this blog.  For those of you looking for some amazing hystorical fiction, and a tale that will keep you up reading late at night, this is the book for you!  I highly recommend it.

This book was an absolutely perfect beach/pool read.  I cannot recommend it enough!  It was a fantastic combination of characters in the most wonderful Irish setting.  This novel of love and cupcakes was memorable.

Reaching the end of this feel-good, lesson-filled story was bitter/semi-sweet.  I wish is could have lasted even longer.  And I love books like that.  This is definitely a story that I will come back to over and over again.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne

TITLE:  Journey to the Centre of the Earth
AUTHOR:  Verne, Jules
GENRE: Science Fiction
MY RATING:  3/5
DATE FINISHED:  7/9/2011

It was lovely reading yet another classic, but I'm definitely glad that I finished it right during the start of my vacation.  I can't say that this book classifies as a "beach read".  I had a 16 hour road trip on the way down to my vacation, and I finished the majority of Journey to the Centre of the Earth on the way there.

I must say, the adventurer's visit to the center of the Earth was an extremely short one.  There were a few exciting chapters, but they were very wordy (as is the language of Verne).  However, the descriptive sections were interesting enough.  As far as classics go, this was wonderful.  I enjoyed it a lot more than I anticipated I would.

Beach Reading!

Starting this afternoon, I'm going to be off the grid!  I'm going on vacation with my boyfriend, and my family.  So, I will likely be unable to blog at all while I'm away (if I can, the entries will be short and sweet!).  I plan to do a lot of reading by the pool and the beach...

I am still in the process of reading Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne, and I am a huge fan!  It's very short and to the point, and although not a style I'm usually fond of, I think it's fantastic.

I am bringing 4 other books with me to share with my best friend.  Folly Beach by Dorothea Benton Frank, Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt, Semi-Sweet: A Novel of Love and Cupcakes by Roisin Meaney, and The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender.  I can't wait to read all of them!!!

No matter what, I will definitely keep a record of when I started which books, and what I thought of them.  But until then, Journey to the Centre of the Earth it is... and rightfully so, seeing as I'm going to be going on a huge adventure starting this afternoon.

Will read and write soon!

I would recommend this book to any Trekkie, die hard Star Wars fan, or overall fan of Simon Pegg and his work.  It was a great read, and I'm certainly glad I picked it up!

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

TITLE:  Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1)
AUTHOR:  Clare, Cassandra
GENRE: Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  6/23/2011

I am finally starting Clockwork Angel!  I've had it since my birthday in December, and I've been prolonging the inevitable.  But it is most definitely time that I pick this book up!

I finally finished this book, and it was awesome!  Writing prequels is usually such a risk for an author, but Cassandra Clare doctored this one perfectly.  I believe it actually came out right after City of Glass, and most people read it before they read City of Fallen Angels.  I think if I had read then in that order, I probably would have gotten more of the references from the final book.  While I was reading this one, I kept thinking "I know this name.  Why is it important?"

But, overall, the book was fantastic!  I cannot wait for the next book in the Infernal Devices series.  I hope Cassandra Clare releases another book soon because I just can't get enough!

Mortal Instruments Casting Information!

Because I am about half-way through with Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare (I'm making it last as long as I can!!!), I figured I would dig in on the casting/rumored casting of the upcoming Mortal Instruments film (based on City of Bones).  There are some very interesting choices so far, and I'm trying to remain as unbiased as possible.  But I know that it's a heated topic among many.

I am absolutely thrilled that Lily Collins has been officially cast, and chosen to play Clary!  She's perfectly petite, and I feel like she has the prettiest eyes.  Not to mention, she looks fantastic as a red head.  I think she'll do a wonderful job.  Her work in The Blind Side was great.  I kind of love that, other than that, she hasn't really been on the big screen a lot.  All of the Mortal Instruments fans seem thrilled with this casting choice, and I cannot blame them!

A huge topic of discussion over the last few week has been the casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as the infamous Jace Wayland!  I have been reading up on the casting and apparently Cassandra Clare cried during his audition with Lily Collins.  Everyone may have pictured Jace a little differently in their own mind (I know there were a lot of Alex Pettyfer fans out there!).  But I'm going to trust Ms. Clare's decision.  Jamie is an experienced actor and I'm sure he will be fabulous!

This next one is actually a rumored casting, so it's not official.  But personally, I think it's a perfect choice.  There have been rumors flying around that Carter Jenkins may be considered for the role of Simon.  I don't know about everyone else out there, but I think he would be awesome!  Carter was recently in the film, Valentine's Day, and I feel like he has the perfect sweetness for this role.

Obviously, none of these roles are/were up for us to decide, so I'm putting full faith into the casting directors of Mortal Instruments.  I'm sure it will ending up being awesome!  And, so far, I feel the casting is spot on.

Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright and David Leslie Johnson

TITLE:  Red Riding Hood
AUTHOR:  Blakley-Cartwright, Sarah/Johnson, David Leslie
GENRE: Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  2.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  6/14/2011

This book was very fun to read, and obviously a very quick read.  It was absolutely an interesting take on the original story of Little Red Riding Hood.  I wouldn't say it was my favorite book in the world, but it was nice to read.

Definitely a book that's meant to stay in the teen romance section.  But if that's all you're looking for it was amazing!  I must say that the twist in the end definitely got me.  I've read several others in the genre and really enjoyed them, but this just wasn't my type of story.  But I love the cover.

...Only one day!  It's been so long since it's taken me only one day to finish a book.  And what a fantastic book it is.  I am officially addicted to Melissa Senate.  I love her story of The Love Goddess' Cooking School, and I love her way of storytelling!  Everything about this book was filled with magic, romance, and food.  It was so amazing that I had to have pasta last night after reading.  I was craving it so much from reading about it.

I would recommend this book to anyone.  And yet again, I commend my most dear friend for her reading choices!

This book was so much fun!  I can't believe that it took me almost 2 weeks to finish.  It took a big day of doing nothing to get through it (I've just been so busy lately!).  But what a phenomenal story!

The only criticism I had, was that - for someone who reads a lot of books - the plot line was slightly predictable.  I figured out the ending right in the middle of the book.  But just watching the plot unfold was absolutely beautiful.

The story, setting, and characters were interesting and great to read about.  It's nice to read a story about a heroine with attitude!  This is definitely a very Mulan-esque story.  I loved it!

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

TITLE:  Ender's Game
AUTHOR:  Card, Orson Scott
GENRE: Science Fiction
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED: 5/31/2011

I just finished the second half of this book in less than a day.  The second half of it definitely moved a lot faster than the first half did.  I enjoyed it quite a bit!

Overall, I feel this book cannot be outgrown.  It's a fantastic read for middle-schoolers and middle-agers alike.  It takes a little while to get used to the world and the terminology.  But once you do... you're hooked.

Aging of Books

I am still in the middle of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, and it is proving just as fantastic as before.  Reading my brother's old copy made me think about how books age, both on the shelf and in our hands.    Books hold more than just words; they hold the memories of the times when we've read them.  Have you ever read a book before, and come across an old bookmark, or a dog-eared page?  I always smile when I see these sorts of things, and I am dedicating this post to the aging of books and to the memories we leave behind within them.

I suppose the most common place to find something like this would be in a cookbook.  My mom and I have always loved to cook, and just turning the pages of a cookbook brings back many wonderful memories, and the dog-eared pages of favorite recipes (including some leftover crumbs).

I've found my memories within books in a lot of strange ways.  I just went camping with my family this past weekend, and when I picked up the book after I got home, it still smelled of the campfire (and even had some ashes smudged on the pages!).  It brought me right back to roasting marshmallows for s'mores.

But perhaps my favorite memory that I've found was from our old family cat.  My mom was reading to my brother and I when we were little, and our cat jumped up onto the bed with us and took a nibble right out of the corner of one of the pages!  Normally that would be upsetting... but whenever I go up to my old room, I pull out that same book and find the page with the corner missing, and remember that moment.

So whether it's a torn page, which may seem sacreligious to book lovers or not (see Dead Poet's Society), or a coffee stain from a rainy day... books hold many memories for us all.  So next time you find one, take a moment to appreciate the history your books keep.

DISCLAIMER:  Please be kind to your books.  Don't dog-ear pages.  Use a bookmark!

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

TITLE:  Something Borrowed
AUTHOR:  Giffin, Emily
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  4/5
DATE FINISHED: 5/26/2011

I have to say that I absolutely loved this book!  It made me reevaluate all of my own relationships with "best friends" throughout the years.  Something Borrowed explores that ever-loving, can't live without, love you-hate you, can't stand you, competitiveness that almost everyone experiences with a "best friend" at some point.

What I love most about this book, is that - in a way - it disguises itself as a romance.  I feel that it definitely has romantic notes to it, but the core is about the romance and art of the frenemy (I hate that term, but had to use it at least once!).

This book appropriately showcases many different types of love and friendship, and how they can morph into a mess or something downright spectacular.  It answers the age old question, what if you met the love of your life, but you were engaged to someone else?  Would you just let them pass you by?

Angelology by Danielle Trussoni

TITLE:  Angelology
AUTHOR:  Trussoni, Danielle
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  ?/5
DATE FINISHED:  TBA

I know I probably seem flighty lately because I keep putting books down.  But, sadly, Angelology was not exactly the thrill ride that I had hoped for.  There definitely was a fantastic story line, but it just took me way too long to feel connected to the characters, or to the plot for that matter.

There is a lot of history on angels, and the majority of the book deals with a convent.  I felt that the bulk of the story revolved around explanations, and less around actual plot and character development.

And if you've read my blog up to this point, you know I'm huge on plot and character development.  Maybe I'll pick it up again someday soon because I have heard good things about it.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

TITLE:  The Help
AUTHOR:  Stockett, Kathryn
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  5/5
DATE FINISHED:  5/16/2011

This book has been compared to To Kill and Mockingbird.  I loved (absolutely adored) that story and feel like it changed my life.  We could all use more books that change out lives.

There are few books in your life that truly change you, and the way you think.  This is, without a doubt, one of them.  Everything about this book is absolutely charming.  It doesn't leave you wanting more (because it's perfect just the way it is).

The description of everything within the book is delicious to read.  The location, the dialogue, and most importantly, the characters.  Throughout reading The Help, you make crucial connections and care deeply about each character's fate.  Aibileen, Minny, Skeeter... every single one of them.

There are so many heartfelt lessons to be learned from this story, and I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.  It's a lovely book to sink into like warm, Jackson, Mississippi weather.  I loved it!

Meet Me in Venice by Elizabeth Adler

TITLE:  Meet Me in Venice
AUTHOR: Adler, Elizabeth
GENRE:  Fiction/Mystery
MY RATING:  3/5
DATE FINISHED:  5/11/2011

One of my friends gifted me this book a while ago, and I've finally decided to pick it up.

I finally finished this book!  It was a really quick read.  I would have finished it must faster if I hadn't been interrupted by graduation and a trip home.  In fact, I finished the majority of it on a bus ride.

The characters and settings were fun to read about.  All of the different cultures seemed to be portrayed very realistically.

This book was definitely a summer beach read that didn't require a lot of thought.  But sometimes, that's exactly what you need!

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

TITLE:  Water for Elephants
AUTHOR: Gruen, Sara
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING:  5/5
DATE FINISHED:  5/4/2011

A new month, and a new book.  I have started this new book because my dearest friend told me I must do so.  After tantalizing me with tales of nights not being able to put it down, she simply pushed it towards me and said, "You need to read this.  And don't go to see the movie."

What a marvelous story!  I absolutely could not put this book down.  And for that I must thank my most dear friend.  It was indeed a fantastic choice!

The setting was impeccable.  Everything was set in the marvelously decrepit world of a 1930's traveling circus.  It was eerie and magical at the same time.  In addition, the characters were phenomenal!  Each one had a complexity and possessed the ability to jump right off of the page and stand in front of you.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to escape for a few days.  This book will drag you into a land, wow you, and remind you of the importance of following your heart.

Please read this book and share it with others!

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

TITLE:  A Game of Thones (A Song of Fire and Ice #1)
AUTHOR:  Martin, George R. R.
GENRE:  Fiction/Historical Fantasy
MY RATING: ?/5
DATE FINISHED: TBD

This is certainly an epic.  A little hard to chew on, but I love it so far.

However, another book has fallen into my lap, so I am putting this one on the shelf temporarily.  Unlike, A Feast of Love, I have made huge connections to these characters, and I want to find out what happens.  However, I also must remain loyal to the rules of book juju.  When someone places a book in your hands and says, "You need to read this," you must oblige.  And so I must...

Will return soon!

A Game of Thrones: Eddard Stark

I am a decent way into A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, and it is FANTASTIC!  I've made a vow that I will not watch the HBO series until I am finished reading the book.  Of course, I didn't realize how long the books were.  To sit down with all four in the series is a serious commitment.  The first one is over 800 pages, and it's the shortest out of all four.  I certainly have my work cut out for me.

While I haven't seen the actual HBO series, I have seen a few images, and they certainly are striking.  The characters are almost exactly how I pictured them.  My favorite character, so far, is Eddard Stark the Lord of Winterfell.  The costumes within the new television series look incredible.

I honestly don't think they could have gotten any closer to Eddard Stark than Sean Bean.  He is a phenomenal actor (one of my personal favorites).  He is exactly as I pictured him in the novel.  I will post more soon, but it may take me a while to get through this one.  Will read and write soon!

The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter

TITLE:  The Feast of Love
AUTHOR:  Baxter, Charles
GENRE:  Fiction
MY RATING: ?/5
DATE FINISHED: TBD

So I don't really have the information to write a review on this book.  This is due to the fact that I haven't finished it yet (and I don't think I will for a while).  I've decided to let this book sit for bit before I restart it.

This book was a little too philosophical for me, with a lot of metaphors.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  But I didn't feel that I really connected to any of the characters.  A connection with at least one character, for me, is crucial in order for me to enjoy the book.  I got about halfway through, and I didn't want to force myself to finish it (bad book karma!).

Therefore, this book is going back onto the shelf, where it will sit until I'm ready to take another stab at it.

Off in search of another story!

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

TITLE:  Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls Series #1)
AUTHOR:  Stiefvater,Maggie
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  3.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  4/20/2011

I just finished Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater.  I love the idea (the plot), a lot of the characters, and the cover of this book more than I can say.  However, there was something lacking for me.  I don't quite know what was missing, but sometimes books just don't hit you the right way.

The characters (and there are many of them) were very interesting.  The amount of romance was perfect.  Sam and Grace's story was lovely.  I could feel the emotion pouring off of the pages, and I kept waiting to see what happened for the couple.  However, due to the large amount of characters, it was a little challenging to concentrate at times.

Overall, I feel that the plot was well developed, and it was a sweet story.  It's definitely a quick, and fun read.

To the next book!

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

TITLE:  City of Fallen Angels
AUTHOR:  Clare, Cassandra
GENRE:  Fiction/Supernatural
MY RATING:  5/5
DATE FINISHED:  4/18/2011

I have finally finished the infamous book!  And I must say that I'm glad it took so long to finish.  It was wonderful!  Everything I had hoped for in the impending sequel.  I really love this book series.  This version even came with Jace's letter to Clary from the last book!

As usual, all of Clare's characters were great.  Jace has always been my favorite character (and still is!), but all of the other characters are fantastic.  Clary and Jace's story is heart-wrenching, and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.  Cassandra Clare has a way with story telling that always keeps you wondering what will happen next.

I'll admit that I am completely biased and that I love all of the Mortal Instruments series (so far).  But this really is a great book to pick up.  If you haven't read the series yet, (you definitely should!) the books are wonderful for all ages.

Happy reading!

Favorite Childhood Books

I am still in the process of reading City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, and I don't want to rush through it (I enjoy her books so much).  So, instead, I decided to blog about favorite books from a childhood perspective.  I have many favorites, but a few definitely stick out in my mind.  I want to share a few of them with you!

The first one being, The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf.  I absolutely love this book.  My mom used to read it to me all the time.  And I still feel that the story is so beautiful.  For those of you who have seen the fantastic movie, Blind Side, with Sandra Bullock, this book is actually featured in the movie.  It sends a great message to children, and is definitely worth the read (even as an adult).

Another book that I will always remember is Norman the Doorman by Don Freeman.  The images from inside of this book were the most striking to me:  the art museum, the sculptures, and the security guard.  All of these collectively make up the sweetest story!

I am ending with one of the classics!  I am a Bunny by Richard Scarry.  Richard Scarry is a fantastic children's author, and these books will stick in your head for enternity!  "I am a bunny, my name is Nicholas, I live in a hollow tree..."  Visually this book is beautiful, memorable, and I still have it in my room at home, right near my bed.  All of Richard Scarry's books are wonderful, but this one strikes a particular note with me

So this post is for all of the books that have influenced us as children.  Do you remember your favorites?  Do you still pull them out and read them every once and a while?

Dead Like You by Peter James

TITLE:  Dead Like You
AUTHOR:  James, Peter
GENRE:  Fiction/Thriller
MY RATING:  4.5/5
DATE FINISHED:  4/10/2011

So, I have finally finished the infamous thriller.  Thrillers aren't usually my cup of tea, but I have to admit that this one was really good.  I actually had to read it with all of my apartment lights on...  The story line was really creepy.  It also tended to be a little graphic in the description of the killer's actions.

The characters are extremely detailed and wonderful to read about (except for the mean ones - even though the descriptions were still spot on!).  Most of them had great personalities.

As for the patented thriller twist, I kind of figured out who the killer was before the end.  But Peter James was quite a trickster!  There was a twist that was completely unexpected.  For those of you who believe thrillers are a dime-a-dozen, and that you can always predict whodunit, this book is definitely for you!

Hopefully on to something a little more my speed.  But this was a refreshing change in book choices!

Dead Like You: Half-way There!

Officially half-way through a novel called Dead Like You by Peter James, and I have to admit it's bloody fantastic so far.  There is a lot of British slang, which I'm not used to... but overall it's awesome.

I'm one of those people that circle/underline words (in pencil, of course!) that I don't know while I'm reading, so that I can look them up later to see what they mean.  All with page numbers for reference.  A little nerdy... but I love learning new words.  Anyway, when I borrowed a friend's book a few months ago, and forgot to erase my circles, she was a little upset.  Therefore, I started a lovely little vocab journal that I carry around with me.

Inside it I write any words I learn during the day, words I don't understand in books that I'm reading, or overall quotes that I absolutely love.  I'll post some of them later on!  I definitely recommend doing this.  It's quite handy!

Back to reading...
